Tomas Berdych cannot handle pressure, thinks Boris Becker – Tennis News
Three-time Wimbledon Champion, Boris Becker of Germany, has said that he believes Czech number one, Tomas Berdych, has some mental problem due to which he cannot finish big matches successfully.
In the latest incident, Berdych lost to the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, in close match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. The Czech star easily lost the first set but was leading against the Serbian
in the second one. Berdych got a 6-3 lead in the second set tie-breaker, having three set points but lost five points in a row to go down.
Commenting on Berdych’s meltdown in a recent interview, Becker said, "That's been the story of his career so far. He is so talented and so powerful that he's got close so many times, but something happens between his ears when
he is about to go to that next stage. It's unfortunate because he is such a fascinating player to watch and he produced a good effort to come back in the second set from a break down, but he can't quite close it out."
Berdych has been in the top 10 for a number of years now but he has won very few titles and the main reason for this is his match temperament. Most of the times he plays superbly in the early stages of tournament but goes down
tamely at the last-eight or four stage.
The Czech star has never clinched a Grand Slam title. He reached the final of Wimbledon Championships in 2010 but went down at the hands of clay specialist, Rafael Nadal, in a one sided match.
However, 1997 Wimbledon quarter-finalist and former British number two, Greg Rusedski, thinks that Djokovic should be praised for the effort he made a how he fought back from the brink of defeat to win the contest.
Rusedski stated, "You've got to give credit to Djokovic - that return at 5-6 in the tie-breaker after being down 5-1 was a sensational way to set point.”
According to the Brit, such fighting capabilities and pressure handling ability in the crunch situations proves the fact the Djokovic is currently the best player in the world.
