Tomas Berdych defeats Juan Monaco in the third round of Mutua Madrid Open
Czech tennis pro Tomas Berdych defeated Argentina’s Juan Monaco in straight sets in their third round match at 2011 Mutua Madrid Open, being played at the Park Manzanares in Barcelona, Spain. The Czech pro undid his opponent to
secure a position in the quarterfinal of the ATP World Tour 1000 Series tournament. The player, who is seeded seventh, remitted a lopsided loss to Monaco with a 7-5, 6-3 defeat. Berdych took just a little over one hour and forty eight minutes to progress into
the next round.
World number seven, Berdych looked very determined and focused from the start and generated the appropriate balance of attack and defence to win without any difficulty. Monaco was just too loose and kept struggling to break back
during the whole match. He looked competitive in only some parts of the first set, but he fell off terribly after his opponent clinched 100 percent of the break points on return and clinched the first set with a 7-5 score.
The second set was an easy deal for the Czech, as Monaco appeared to have worn out in the first set. He was definitely disheartened by the consequences, despite the fact that he tried his best to get a hold on his serve. Monaco
was broken thrice himself, and managed to score 71 percent of his first serve points. Both players didn’t commit any double fault, although Berdych hit two aces. Berdych was largely in control of the second set and scored five more points than his opponent
to take the second set 6-3 with a whopping 75 percent on his first serves.
The 6-ft 5-in tall Berdych has won five ATP career titles so far, and is 25 year old. He had defeated the Argentine twice before, and their head-to-head is now 3-0. Berdych will face Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in the quarterfinal
of the tournament. The Czech pro raced to stardom six years ago when he struggled to win his first and only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 series event in Paris. Bellucci on the other hand, has been very lucky this year with some impressive wins over some big
names in men’s tennis including Florian Mayer and Pablo Cuevas. Both players will be going to meet each other for the third time when they clash in the quarterfinal of Madrid Masters on Friday.
Czech is a clear favourite to win right now as he is displaying a better 2011 Campaign. He is looking very confident, having taken out Marcel Granollers in his previous match with a 6-4, 6-0 sore line. However, an upset is possible
here given a very determined and focused Bellucci, who is all set to meet his opponent for the third time.
