Tomas Berdych defeats Marcel Granollers in the second round of Mutua Madrid Open
Tomas Berdych’s victory over Marcel Granollers on Wednesday came as no surprise to his fans, when he defeated his opponent with a 6-4, 6-0 score line. World number seven,
Berdych scored an easy victory over Granollers in the second round of Mutua Madrid Open at Park Manzanares in Madrid, Spain. Berdych was too strong for the distressed Spaniard wild card, who showed occasional flashes of ability but was overwhelmed in the end.
Utilizing his solid baseline skills to devastating effect, the Czech number one completely dominated the Spaniard and didn’t allow him to break back. The Czech looked very
clear from his mind that what he wanted to achieve and put his serve to great effect which worked well against his opponent. Berdych looked in total control throughout the match and cruised past a disappointing and totally lackluster Spaniard who never got
into the match at any point.
In the first set both players put up a tremendous fight and exchanged serve breaks. However when the score was tied at 3-3, Berdych created another chance and left Granollers
standing with a dreamy forehand straight down the line to go 4-3. The Czech then held on to his next serve games to ensure a first set victory with a 6-4 score line. Berdych won 57 percent of points on his service, 51 percent of points on return and 54 percent
of points in total. Granollers on the other hand lagged behind with a difference of 8 percent in total and handed over the first set.
Berdych carried his momentum in the final set and once again came through comfortably in the second set against the Spaniard, who had four breakpoint chances in the set
but failed to take three of them, handing over the set without winning a single game. Berdych served effectively and won 62 percent of points in total whereas his opponent hanged back with a difference of 24 percent and lost the match in straight sets.
Berdych is all set to face World number 43 Juan Monaco of Argentina. Berdych and Monaco will be going to face each other for the fourth time in their career when the two
meet in the third round of the Mutua Madrid open on Thursday. Their latest encounter came at the CZE vs. ARG WG QF, where Berdych prevailed in a marathon five setter. The Czech pro doesn’t appear to be in the same form that took him to the finals of Miami
Masters and Wimbledon in 2010, however his solid 20-8 record will definitely going to assist him to find his lost glory.
