Tomas Berdych demolishes Philipp Kohlschreiber in second round – China Open 2011
World number 10, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, faced no real challenge in dumping the 52nd ranked German opponent, Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the second round of the China Open on Wednesday afternoon.
Being played on the outdoor hard courts of the Olympic Green Tennis Center, in Beijing, China, the contest witnessed sheer dominance of the third seeded Czech competitor. Berdych rocketed away to victory in just 63 minutes of play,
settling the final scores at 6-2, 6-0, to make a berth in the quarter-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
It was an all-Czech show, with Berdych dominating every segment of the game. Kohlschreiber utterly failed to put up any resistance to the furry of Berdych and crumbled in the second set to end his voyage at the China Open. The
German failed to hold serve in five of his seven games in the matchup, falling out of the competition in a humiliating manner.
It was Kohlschreiber’s second defeat in the running ATP season at the hands of the Czech, who outplayed him in the Australian Open clash, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, earlier. Berdych registered his 44th victory of the season
against Kohlschreiber and now leads 6-1 in his head-to-head series against the German.
Berdych took a steady in the opener but gathered up pace shortly afterwards to race past his opponent. He dropped just three points on his serve, reeling off 14 out of 17 first serve points in the game and nailed three out of 13
break points to come out as the winner.
The third seed registered his first serve break of the day in the fourth game to lead 3-1 but Kohlschreiber responded very quickly in the next game to score his only break point of the match. Berdych then shifted his gears and
never looked back at Kohlschreiber in the rest of the match. The Czech stung five straight serve breaks in the contest to fly to a comprehensive victory in the most dominating fashion. Finishing at 6-2, 6-0.
Berdych needs to go through the unseeded Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, in the next encounter to qualify for the semi-final round of the China Open. Verdasco earned a hard-fought victory against the Italian qualifier, Flavio Cipolla,
in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round of the tournament to meet Berdych in the quarters.
