Tomas Berdych devastates Benjamin Becker in the opening round – Dubai Tennis Championships 2012
World number seven, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, had no difficulty at all to dump the 30-year-old German veteran, Benjamin Becker, in the opening round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The Czech number one kept
his impressive record against Becker by nailing him down for the fifth time in his career to lead 5-1 in the head-to-head series. He took merely 62 minutes of play to outshine the 155th ranked opponent in twin-sets, 6-2, 6-2, marching into the round
of 16 at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Local crowd at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre witnessed another exhibition of sheer domination and class from Berdych on Tuesday afternoon. The fifth seed Czech was absolutely ballistic throughout the contest and outplayed his
opponent in every segment of the game. He cruised through the two sets with the utmost ease, keeping the games short and professional to wrap up thing very quickly.
Becker proved to be a total mismatch for the in-form world number seven and completely failed to match his game play. Berdych won an ATP World Tour 250 title in Montpellier, France, last month and has been in supreme touch since
then. He played aggressive tennis and had very tight control over the unforced errors to take the better of the bleak German rival.
Although Berdych delivered just 58 per cent of his serve on target, he dropped merely five points on his first serve, clinching 25 out of 29 to seal his emphatic victory. The fifth seed Czech drew first blood in the fourth game
of the match to lead 3-1 and then held his own serve to extend it to 4-1. Becker utterly failed to register any break point in the entire matchup and a crushing break of serve in the eighth game concluded the opener for Berdych at 6-2.
The following set was a complete replication of the first one in all aspects. Berdych broke the German serve again in the fourth and the eighth games to win the set at 6-2.
Up next for the fifth seed in the second round is the Slovakian qualifier, Lukas Lacko, who was successful against Sergei Bubka in the opening round. Lacko fought out six match points in the third set tie-breaker and eventually
wrapped up victory at, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(14), to book a date with Berdych in the round of 16.
