Tomas Berdych edges Juan Monaco in the second rubber – Davis Cup WG 2012
Czech Republic’s number one player, Tomas Berdych, fought back from 1-2 down to defeat Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-1, 4-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second rubber of Davis Cup World Group semi-final tie.
Berdych’s win levelled the tie score at 1-1, as Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina had beaten Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the first rubber to give Argentina an early advantage.
The world number six, Berdych, made a good start, as she broke the Argentinean in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Monaco hit a blow in the third to cut the trail to 1-2 but he lost four in a row to throw it away 1-6.
The Argentinean responded by starting the second set in the same was as Berdych had started the first, nailing a break in the second game to move ahead 2-0. However, the Czech did not take much time to equalise the proceedings
at 2-2. Monaco regained the control afterwards, winning four successively to close it 6-2.
The 28-year-old was almost flawless in the third set, as he allowed Berdych to clinch just one game till the end, sealing it 6-1.
Monaco was looking to win the match quickly, as he struck in the third game of the fourth set and held his next serve to attain a 3-1 lead. Though, Berdych turned around the situation later on, as he won five of the following six
to capture it 6-4.
The Czech star made a flying start in the decider, as he won first four games to grab a 4-0 lead. Monaco tried his best to come on equal terms but he failed and lost it 4-6.
During the post match press conference, Berdych said, “I had pretty much nothing to do but to believe in myself and that I’m a player in the certain level, and I’m able to turn the matches like this even with a crowd like that.
Everything that was going for him, I was able to get energy from that and that was the result.”
On the other hand, Monaco stated, “Tomorrow is a new day. I’m going to recover a little bit, practice, try to get some feeling on court again, then I think I have to eat well, recover and just be ready to play and have new revenge
I guess on Sunday. That’s the good part of Davis Cup.”
Argentina is bidding to reach the final for the second successive year and Czech Republic for the second time in the last four years.
