Tomas Berdych hopes to carry the good form to the new season – Tennis News
World number six, Tomas Berdych, is eager to carry the good form into the new season.
He will resume the professional at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship that will commence from 27th December at the Zayed Sports City Stadium.
The biggest glory for the 27-year-old Czech was the first Davis Cup title for his country that came against the toughest side in the world. The final was contested in Prague against the versatile Spanish squad and the two warriors from Czech Republic, Radek
Stepanek and Tomas Berdych, defied all the odds and encountered with utmost aggression; captured the trophy in front of the home crowd for the first time in the history of the event.
Berdych said, “Winning the Davis Cup for my country on home soil is a special way to end the season, especially as it was the 100th final and Spain was the favourites. Personally I am very happy to finish the year in the world’s top six and I hope to carry
my form through to Abu Dhabi, which is a great tournament to begin the new season.”
He further added, “Playing David is always tough. I’m at 6 in the world and he’s at 5. We’ve played nine times now and I’ve won 3. It’s always close and the crowd in Abu Dhabi will be in for a great game on day one.”
A lot of expectations are gathering momentum for the New Year and Berdych is hoping to break the Grand Slam duck in the coming year by winning one of the four Major tournaments including the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon Championships and US Open.
He has not been able to register a breakthrough in the Major trophies department despite having rambled across the title for several times.
Berdych defeated the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, in the quarter-final of the US Open to reach the last four but couldn’t upset the number one Briton, Andy Murray. He has been really unlucky that his big wins haven’t come at the right time. He needs to
unlock the mystery of the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, to boost his chances of winning a Grand Slam title.
