Tomas Berdych levels score for Czech Republic – Davis Cup WG Final
Czech top ranked star, Tomas Berdych, rallied past Spain’s Nicolas Almagro in a five-set mouth-watering battle at the Davis Cup World Group 2012 on Friday. He summed up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory against the Spanish number three to level the scores
for his nation in the final showdown of this prestigious tournament.
The Czech star displayed magnificent tennis skills to outclass Almagro in their 12th encounter. After stealing the show in three hours and 58 minutes, Berdych improved to a 9-3 record in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head
2 Head Series against his fellow 27-year-old and levelled the scores by 1-1 against Spain in this final round.
Berdych jubilantly stated in a courtside interview after outshining the Spaniard:
“It's our first point and that's all. I'm extremely happy for that. To play with this crowd on my back is an amazing feeling. I was enjoying everything on court... I think that the human body is a really strong engine. I will give everything I have. I just
need to get ready again. Tomorrow is another day.”
The world number six comfortably entered the O2 Arena in Prague. He smoothly slid his entire serves with poise and with a single break of serve in the eighth game, Berdych carved out the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 11th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Almagro made a fitting reply in the proceeding set. He swiftly plucked his entire serves and after getting the breakthrough in the sixth game, the Spaniard registered a 6-3 success.
The Monte Carlo resident, Berdych drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead in the third set. He then held his composure and bagged his remaining serves, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to three.
Almagro carried his drastic ways towards the fourth set. He suffered the first blow in the opening game and fell at 0-2. However, he not only snatched his break back in the sixth game but dominated in the tie-breaker, eventually pulling out the equaliser
with a 7-6(5) score line.
The local hero re-gained his early momentum in the deciding set which matters the most. He held his serves until he got the critical break in the sixth game and took a 4-2 lead. Despite losing his edge in the very next game, Berdych cashed another break
chance in the eighth game and subsequently clicked the decider with a 6-3 win.
