Tomas Berdych on Davis Cup: “So far, it’s the biggest moment of my career” – Tennis News
Last meeting between Czech Republic and Spain in the World Group Davis Cup Final wasn’t the one to forget for the former side as they were thrashed by the versatile Spanish squad to a 5-0 score line in Barcelona on the clay court
surface that is predominantly ruled by the Spanish players. However, the revenge mission is on this season and the kick-off begins on the eve of Friday between the likes of the fifth ranked David Ferrer who will take on the 33-year-old Czech star, Radek Stepanek.
Later in the day, the 11th ranked Nicolas Almagro will lock horns against the sixth ranked Tomas Berdych.
Berdych stated in a pre-clash interview, “So far, it’s the biggest moment of my career. It is our goal to bring the trophy back after so many years.” Czech Republic has a clear cut advantage as they play at their home soil in Prague.
Everyone in the arena will back their players and the hard court surface also makes a case stronger in their favour. However, the Spanish representatives are here to retain the title and will not bow down easily. They will fight until the last moment of energy
and probably look to keep the tie alive until the last rubber battle.
Former world number one, Ivan Lendl, was the player who led his team to win the only Davis Cup trophy for Czechoslovakia, back in 1980. He is coaching the third ranked Briton Andy Murray these days. So, it has been more than three
decades that the Czech Republic is hunting a Davis Cup trophy. On the other hand, Spain has won the trophy for the last two years and look set to repeat the heroics this time around as well.
As an independent nation, Czech Republic hasn’t won any Davis Cup trophy. They separation of Czechoslovakia divided a nation into Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. Hence, Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek are on a mission to
register a milestone. They can survive the onslaught of visitors but they will have to work extremely hard and stay focused on the task to stop the Spanish squad from registering a hat-trick.
