Tomas Berdych ousts Fernando Verdasco in the quarter-finals – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
World number seven, Tomas Berdych, ousted the Spanish star, Fernando Verdasco, to reach the semi-final stage of the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday. He finished off the business with the local in an hour and six minutes; registering
straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
It was the tenth win for the Czech against Verdasco who has just defeated him on four different occurrences. Berdych kicked off the match with a thumping serve hold and took a lead in the fourth game courtesy to a classic winner
down the line that helped him bag the first breakpoint of the match.
The Czech continued to power down the local and registered another breakthrough in the sixth game that built a monumental lead of 5-1 in his favour. He just needed to hold serve and take the set which he did with no pressure at
all from the local hero.
Verdasco looked a bit worn out and lost the opening serve game of the second set as well. The sixth seed Czech took a lead of 2-0 and continued to dominate the proceedings. He gave no opportunity at all to the 15th seed
Spaniard to take control of the set. It was a world class performance from Berdych who clinched the second breakpoint of the set in the seventh game and finally held serve to close all doors for the Spaniard.
In a post-match interview, Berdych said, “I feel great. I'm in another semi-final, [the] second in a row. To beat Fernando made me feel great. It is always tough to beat Fernando, even though the score looks quite easy. It's not
easy to beat a Top 20 player and he played great yesterday [against Rafael Nadal]."
Talking about his next opponent, the Argentine number one, Juan Martin Del Potro, he stated, “I'm expecting a really tough match. To play Juan Martin is always tough, he's a great guy and he knows how to win the Grand Slams. He's
definitely back after his [wrist] injury. So far this year, I have already lost to him and it would be nice to get him back now. I will try to do my best, to play my game, to be aggressive."
Del Potro will try his best to reach the finals of two tournaments in succession.
