Tomas Berdych ousts Marcel Granollers to reach third round – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013
World number six, Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic, tumbled the Spanish contestants, Marcel Granollers, in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2013 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 7-5, 6-4 victory against the Spaniard to power into the third at
this clay court tournament taking place in Monte Carlo, France.
The seeded Czech unveiled his true potential, eventually carving out the victory in one hour and 44 minutes.
The Czech top ranked star commented in an interview after clicking the match:
"Always the first matches are kind of tough. If you get an opponent like Marcel, it is even tougher. In the end, I felt quite good. I was trying to find the clay court rhythm in the beginning. I lost my serve, I gave him some chances, but in the end, I just
got myself back focused for the points, the important ones. I was able to hold my serve, take my chances and finish it in straight sets."
Berdych made a slow start in this match. He suffered the first blow in the third game and went 1-3 down. However, the Czech remained calm and recovered in the eighth game. He lost his edge in the very next game but went berserk, eventually sealing the opener
by winning seven games to five.
The 27-year-old lost his path again towards the following set. He lost his edge in the opening game and went 0-2 down. After trailing at 2-4, Berdych re-focused his strategy after this and subsequently wiped out the last four games. He jolted down the victory
with a 6-4 win.
The Czech veteran is in good run of form. He recorded his 22nd match victory after triumphing over Granollers and reached far in all the events he entered. His achievements this year includes runner-up finish in Marseille (lost to Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga) and in Dubai (underplayed against Novak Djokovic).
The world number one, Novak Djokovic, will join Berdych in the proceeding round. He made a drastic entry and lost his opening set. However, he re-gained his strength and subsequently pulled out the victory with a breadstick. The Serbian number one recorded
a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 score line against Mikhail Youzhny.
