Tomas Berdych outmuscles Nikolay Davydenko in round two – Barcelona Open 2013
Third seed, Tomas Berdych, bounced back to overpower the former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko, in a three-set thriller at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2013 on Tuesday. He summed up a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory against the Russian to secure a spot
in the third round at this clay court tournament taking place in Barcelona, Spain.
The Czech top ranked star, Berdych made a dismal entry at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event. However, he lifted his game afterwards and eventually carved out the victory. As a result the Czech lowered trail in the
FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 3-9 against Davydenko and entered the round of 16.
The 31-year-old brought his experience into handy and drew the first blood in the opening game to jump to a 2-0 lead. Davydenko then held his composure and bagged his entire serves with poise. The Russian converted another break chance to his advantage in
the last game and clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Berdych got his head into the match in the following set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and leaped to a 2-0 lead. Despite gifting away his serve in the eighth game, the Czech remained calm. He eventually got the breakthrough in the second
last game and grabbed the equaliser by winning seven games to five.
Ranked sixth in the world, Berdych showed his class in the deciding set. He exchanged two serve breaks early in the set. However, the Czech lifted his game and got the crucial break in the fifth game. He then held his remaining serves with poise and clicked
the decider with a 6-4 win.
Next in line for Berdych is the winner of the match between 14th seeded Grigor Dimitrov and the former world number five, Tommy Robredo from Spain. The Czech star is currently in great run of form and with this victory, he stayed on track to capture
the title.
The Latvian qualifier, Ernests Gulbis, showed awe-inspiring skills to stun 12th seeded Fernando Verdasco on another court. He recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the former world number seven, Verdasco, and reached the pre-quarters.
