Tomas Berdych overturns Janko Tipsarevic in Group A clash – Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2011
Seventh ranked Czech competitor, Tomas Berdych, came from behind to turn the tables on the world number nine, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, in his second Round Robin matchup of Group A at the season finale, the Barclays ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Finals, on Wednesday night.
Berdych was pushed back to the match point by the Serbian in the final set tie breaker round but he recovered with great mastery to convert defeat into an emphatic victory at 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). The resilient Tipsarevic hung in the
contest for two hours and twenty six minutes but couldn’t convert the vital opportunity in the last moments of the game, eventually finishing on the losing side.
The fairly posed contest was staged on indoor hard courts of the glorious O2 Arena, in London, with two top class players putting up an enthralling performance with this racquets. Tipsarevic got the golden opportunity to play in
the elite eight-man field at the circuit ending grand finale after the world number three, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, pulled out of the tournament due to groin injury. The Serbian displayed his amazing tennis skills in the contest yet another time and
almost produced an upset in the tournament but a timely recovery from Berdych saved the day for him.
The seventh seed taken down in his opening Round Robin clash against the top seed Novak Djokovic in the very similar fashion on Monday but held his nerve this time round to come out as the winner against the first alternate in
the tournament.
“I was a bit unlucky on Monday [against Novak Djokovic],” said Berdych who is now 1-1 in Group A, “I got luckier here. So1 all. Before the tie-break, I was feeling pretty good, I would say pretty confident. [The] last few games
that I was serving was kind of quick [and] easy. But as long the tie-break went, it was really close.”
Tipsarevic had a blistering start in the opening set, blowing away the Czech number one in a comprehensive manner to get the upper hand early in the match. Berdych made his way back in business with some really aggressive stroke
play to pocket the second set with his only serve break of the day. Both men failed to register a breakthrough in the final set, dragging the matchup in to a tie-breaker round. Tipsarevic reached the first match point at 6-5 but couldn’t deliver the final
blow, eventually dropping three consecutive points to let Berdych away with victory.
