Tomas Berdych rolls past Andreas Seppi into the last four – World Tennis Tournament 2012
Second seed, Tomas Berdych, didn’t face much difficulty in disposing off Andreas Seppi of Italy in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands on Friday. The
Czech top player needed just an hour and seven minutes to outclass his Italian opponent in an assertive manner.
Berdych hit two powerful cross court returns to break Seppi in the sixth game of the opener and consolidated on it to clinch the set 6-3.
Although, the Czech could not hit more than one ace but he captured 13 of the 14 points on the first deliveries. Seppi, who looked in great form in his last match against Philipp Kohlschreiber, failed to save the only break
threat he faced in the first set.
Berdych took an early lead in the second set, claiming first two games. However, Seppi made his way back to square off the score at 2-2. The Czech did not take much time to regain the lost advantage and bagged the set 6-4.
Ranked seventh in the world, Berdych relied on his powerful deliveries to win most of the points during his service games. The Czech smashed four aces and didn’t commit any double fault. The main difference between
Berdych and Seppi was the second serve performance. The Czech succeeded in winning five of the six and Seppi managed to bag just three of the eleven.
After the match, Berdych said, “I played a good match but I'm not happy with that error. I was trying to keep my level high and I did it to save that one game. But I still managed to win in two sets, so it's all okay at the
end. Of course, I have hopes of winning the tournament but it is one match at a time for me.”
Berdych will face world number 10, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, in the semi-final. Del Potro is looking in extreme form, as he bulldozed seventh seed Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinal, dropping only one game in the
entire match and grasping it 6-0, 6-1.
The Argentinean said, commenting on his match up with the Czech, "Berdych has been playing well for the last two years, according to the ranking, he would be the favourite in our match. He has confidence and is a danger on
this surface, I'll just concentrate on my game."
Del Potro leads Berdych 2-1 in the head to head series. The Argentinean defeated Berdych in the last two meetings between these two.
