Tomas Berdych slays Viktor Troicki: Czech Republic vs. Serbia – Davis Cup WG Quarter-finals 2012
Czech number one, Tomas Berdych gave his team a 1-0 lead, as thrashed Viktor Troicki of Serbia in straight sets in the quarter-finals at the Davis Cup World Group on Friday.
Ranked seventh in the world, Berdych allowed his rival to claim just five games in the entire match, dumping him 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in the first rubber of the tie.
The Czech dominated the contest from its beginning, as he snatched breaks in the first and third game, capitalising on them to race to a 4-0 lead. Troicki managed to open his account in the fifth but failed to hit any blow to Berdych,
losing it 2-6.
The proceedings in the second set were quite similar to the first, as Berdych struck early and captured first four games to build a 4-0 advantage. Once again, the Serbian managed to hold his serve in the fifth but the difference
was that Troicki lost his serve again in the seventh game, dropping it 1-6.
After losing the first two sets pretty badly, the Serbian was looking to put up a good fight in the third, as he did not drop his serve in the first four games, taking the score to 2-2. However, all hopes of Troicki’s comeback
ended, when he threw away four consecutive games, losing his serve in the sixth and eight to go down 2-6.
Berdych was the player with superior game throughout the match, despite committing 30 unforced errors.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Berdych shared that he gave his best and proper preparation for the match paid off. He said, "I did what I could. When you get prepared well, anything's possible.”
Czech Republic played their last home Davis Cup tie at the indoor hard courts but chose to hold this one on clay courts. The idea of playing at the slow surface worked as it suited Berdych.
The Czech added, “The court suits us well. That's exactly what we wanted. The most important (thing) was that I could rely on my serve.”
Troicki, who was quite upset after losing the match, said, "Obviously, I played bad from the start. I was too defensive and he gave me no chance to come back. I was really disappointed."
Berdych improved his win/loss record to 18-11 in singles at the Davis Cup. The right-hander also went up in his head to head record against Troicki to 3-1.
