Tomas Berdych suffering a slump in form this season - Tennis News
2010 Wimbledon finalist, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, acquires the Top-10 spot amongst the world-class tennis heroes. However, the 26-year-old’s game has declined considerably over the recent months and many experts believe
in his quick exit from the Top-10 rankings.
The Czech tennis ace has always been a top contender for all the championships. His ranking dropped to number seven, after the last year’s Australian Open campaign; when he lost the match to the then world number three, Novak
Djokovic.
In the subsequent matches, the Czech’s graph of performance showed a declining trend as the veteran lost consecutive series of matches to the lower-ranked opponents. His morale for winning considerably decreased because of
her deteriorating form and he kept lingering in the tournament to gather some respect.
Despite of the endless losses, Berdych remained in the Top-10 players. He strengthened his position in the ATP World Rankings at the China Open by thrashing Marin Cilic in three sets 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1 in the final. The right-hander’s
performance was even remarkable throughout the tournament, showing his increased strength and resolve.
At the start of the 2012 season, Berdych qualified for the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. He encountered a close match with Rafael Nadal, ranked number two at that time, but was outplayed in the end. Similarly, the
young Czech was able to pick one title when he defeated Gael Monfils in the Open Sud de France final.
Berdych kept the number seven spot but faced serious thrashing at the hands of the lower ranked players. He showed exceptionally low grade performance in Wimbledon 2012, when he lost the first match from Ernests Gulbis ranked
87 by 6-7(5), 6-7(4), and 6-7(4).
Many critics believe that Berdych is not as eager as the other players. He only scores in order to get hold of a decent spot in the Top-10.
The former player, coach and now sports analyst Gibert had previously stated, "He won Bercy and [briefly] got to No. 9 in the world and everyone thought he was going to make his move, then the next few years he was the same.
He was not doing anything different and when you stay the same... He is not bailing out and going for winners like he was before. He trusts his movement. He's pulling the trigger from much better positions in the court and his shot selection has improved dramatically."
Berdych is humble, as he does not claim himself equalling to the world champions like Rafael Nadal. However, he is no less capable than any player is, if this is his attitude it is feared that it might become harder for him
to retain a decent position because entry of young talented players in the business.
