Tomas Berdych takes down Julien Benneteau in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number seven, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, continued to impress the tennis fans, as he devastated the unseeded Frenchman, Julien Benneteau, in the second round of Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday afternoon.
The sixth seed Czech wound up the contest in merely 97 minutes to register a convincing straight sets victory at 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, to carry on his voyage into the third round of the Grand Slam tournament being played at the All England
Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England.
The contest was completely one-sided, as Benneteau failed to pose any real resistance to the strong Czech competitor. The French only had one break opportunity in the game and he effectively converted it but had to suffer six from
his rival to finish the contest on the losing end.
29-year-old Benneteau had defeated Berdych in singles contest way back in 2004, when he outclassed the Czech in the opening round of Wimbledon in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Berdych finally avenged his defeat on the same venue
on Wednesday afternoon to register his 30th victory in the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season, while he has lost only 13 matches this year.
The sixth seed showed his amazing agility in the contest, as he traced down the occasional drop shots from his opponent with ease. Berdych’s cross-court stroke making held the key to his success in the matchup, as he belted a number
of elegant winners with authority to exert pressure upon the bleak French opponent.
Despite of a par serve percentage of 58 percent, Berdych secured 34 out of 38 first serve points to come out as the winner in the end. 10 rapid aces were fired by the Czech to the opponent’s court, while conceding just nine unforced
errors in the entire matchup.
The opener took off with an early exchange of serve breaks from the two contestants but Benneteau’s flare faded away very soon. Berdych stung two more serve breaks to take away the opening set at 6-1, showing his aggressive intent.
The Czech continued to force his way through the rest of the game, winning the following two sets comprehensively to register an easy victory in the end and entering the third round of Wimbledon. Berdych’s third round opponent
will be the American competitor, Alex Bogomolov, who upset the 25th seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina in straight sets 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of the tournament.
