Tomas Berdych tops Sam Querrey to reach final – Winston-Salem Open 2012
Second seed, Tomas Berdych, took down the local star, Sam Querrey, in straight sets at the Winston-Salem Open 2012 on Friday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-3 victory against the world number 28 to book a spot in the final showdown at the Wake Forest University
in North Carolina, United States.
The wild card recipient proved his class after pulling out the victory in their third encounter at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event. After earning the fame in one hour and 39 minutes, Berdych not only avenged his loss at the US Open four years
ago but also improved to a 2-1 lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the American.
“I don’t think I necessarily needed to break him five times, but on the other hand, I lost my serve a couple of times. I was trying to get my chances,” the ecstatic Czech was quoted after clinching the match. “In the first set, I had more than 10 break points.
Probably the one thing I was not happy with was my serve in the second set. I lost quite an easy game. I was playing better on the tough points and that was the decider today.”
The 26-year-old made a slacking start at this ATP World Tour 250 series event. He suffered the first blow in the opening game and fell at 0-2. After trailing at 2-4, Berdych sought his rhythm and went on a four-game tear. He spectacularly cashed in two out
of 12 break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked seventh in the world, Berdych kept momentum sailing in the follow-up set. He got the coveted break in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Despite failing to ward off both breakpoints he came across, the Czech remained focused and recovered in the
sixth game. He capitalised on another break chance in the eighth game to get the breakthrough and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to three.
He will square off against the third seed, John Isner, in the title-round. The American number one stunned top seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France in a three-set thriller to set up this battle.
