Tomas Berdych unhappy on umpire’s pivotal decision in a match against Andy Murray – Tennis News
World number seven, Tomas Berdych, was shown the way towards the exits by the Briton number one, Andy Murray, on Thursday in the Dubai Duty Free Championships quarter-finals. He lost in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. He was disappointed
at his effort on court but was more furious on the decision of the umpire, Mohamed Lahyani, during the twelfth game of the second set.
The scores were 6-6 at that stage when Murray called for a review on his serve that was identified to be out from the umpire. The ball was actually in and hence the Briton was awarded the point but Berdych wanted the point to be
replayed. The Swedish umpire allotted the point to Murray which proved to be the last point of the match.
Tennis icon from Czech Republic, Berdych stated, “Actually I was asking for it [the referee]. He [umpire] said that he cannot change it because it is his judge. What can I do? I mean, whatever he says, and then he's right. That's
the problem actually, because the supervisor should be on court and he should see the situation."
It is the second occasion in two months that Berdych has been involved in some controversy. Earlier in the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, he registered a very agonizing triumph over the Spanish number
three, Nicolas Almagro.
He refused to shake his hands because the Spaniard had struck him the ball straight at his face during a return shot in the match. However, Almagro did apologize to the Czech but his apology was not accepted. Later, Berdych realised
that he had made a fool of himself and decided to apologize to everyone for his unfriendly behaviour at the court.
This time he might be right. He further added, “"I have a big problem with it and I don't like it for reasons like that. It's a bad rule, because it comes down to how the umpire sees it. They don't always see it the same way as
the players do.” These rules should be stated crystal clear to the players so that no further problems occur in the future.
