Tomas Berdych wins his bet, losses his hair – Tennis News
It can be strange that what holds the price of success for different people. For the world number seven, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, it is to shave his head bald. Sarcastic but true, as the Czech tennis star went under the
razor in his locker room at the O2 Arena in London, immediately after his loss the sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the semi-final of the Barclays ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Finals on Saturday.
Berdych revealed that he has shaved his head bald to honour a bet he made to his coach, Tomas Krupa, this summer and he is really delighted to fulfil his commitment.
“Bet is a bet,” Berdych shared on Facebook. “We have made one in Wimbledon that if I take part in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, win at least one title and 50 matches in this season, my hair is going down.”
Berdych discharged all the three conditions of his bet by the season end in London. The Czech number one ended his 29-month title drought in China, winning an ATP World Tour 500 event in Beijing, this October. Rated at number 10
at that time, he outplayed the then world number seven, Tsonga, in the semi-final to book a championship battle with Croatia’s number one, Marin Cilic, in the final of the tournament. Berdych finally won his first championship title in more than two years’
time, beating Cilic in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the seventh spot in the ATP World Rankings.
His win in Beijing broke him into the Top-8 in the rankings, accomplishing his second condition of his bet as well. Berdych completed his 50th victory of the running year at the last ATP Masters 1000 event of the season,
the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. He took down then 13th ranked Serbian, Janko Tipsarevic, in the round of 16 to complete his half century of victories in the current year. It was the first time in his career that Berdych has registered more than
50 victories in an ATP season and it was an achievement of sorts for him as well.
Berdych believes his fans will like his new bald look in the next season and is happy to pay his price of success in the season. Berdych finished the 2011 ATP season with 53-23 winning record and extending his championship title
count to a total of six.
