Tomas Buchacek wins first stage in 2011 Course de Solidarnosc ET des Champions Olympiques
PSK Whirlpool – Author team’s Tomas Buchacek won the first stage and also took overall leader’s yellow jersey in 2011 Course de Solidarnosc ET des Champions Olympiques on Wednesday, June 29.
The race started in Nowy Sacz and ended in Krosno. The 33-year-old Tomas took a total of 4 hours, 21 minutes and 24 seconds to cover the distance of 171.6 kilometres.
Marcin Sapa of Polska Szosowa was the runner-up and Lukasz Bodnar of CCC Polsat Pokowice finished in the third spot.
Lukasz Bodnar was in good form and tried his best to catch the three leading cyclists, but he failed and grabbed the fourth place with a difference of 4 seconds.
After a few kilometres, the three cyclists made their first their breakaway, which include Michal Podlaski (Polska Elita), Jenning Huizenga (Netherlands) and Oleksandr Sheydyk (Isd - Lampre Continental).
All of them gained a lead of few seconds over the peloton and Jenning Huizenga attacked, but he failed and Michal Podlaski took the first and second sprint of the stage.
In the last sprint, Jenning Huizenga again attacked and took a lead ahead of Michal Podlaski and Vitaliy Popkov.
Rob Peeters (Telenet – Fidea) maintained his pace in the first mountain of the stage ahead of Arnaud Grand. Oleksandr Sheydyk attacked and gained a lead in the second mountain and Michal Podlaski took the third and fourth mountain.
In the fifth mountain the group of six cyclists were working together, but Tomasz Marczynski (CCC Polsat Pokowice) grabbed 7 points ahead of Pawel Cieslik.
However, Michal Podlaski took the King of Mountain (KOM) title due to his good performance, ahead of Marczynski and Oleksandr.
Arnaud Grand took the title of best young rider classification, ahead of Pawel Bernas and Bartosz Warchol.
Tomas also took the overall standing with a timing of 4 hours, 21 minutes and 14 seconds. Marcin Sapa was the runner-up with 4 seconds behind Tomas and Lukasz Bodnar finished third with a difference of 6 seconds.
The next stage will start in Jaslo and end in Kraków. All the riders will cover the distance of 159.1 kilometres.
