Tomas Kaberle speaks out on Father’s comments
Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle met with reporters on Wednesday to proclaim that his relationship with head coach Ron Wilson has nothing to do with Kaberle's father.
Kaberle’s father, Frantisek Kaberle raised speculation last month that his son and Wilson did not see eye-to-eye and that Kaberle did not want to play for Toronto if Wilson was the coach. Frantisek Kaberle told a Czech hockey magazine that although Tomas has a no-trade clause he didn't believe his son would play for the Leafs for the whole season.
Kaberle, who returned to Toronto to prepare for training camp told reporters that his father meant well and was just sticking up for him
"My father's opinion I can't control," he told a scrum at the team's practice facility. "Can you control your Dad? I love my Dad, but I don't agree with everything my father says. That's normal. And I don't agree with everything with (my coach). But (especially) when you're losing, you get into some arguments."
Kaberle has one year remaining on his current contract with the Leafs. The Leafs had an opportunity to trade Kaberle during the summer, but general manager Brian Burke was not happy in what was being offered in return. Kaberle’s no-trade clause kicked back in last month and he can now approve or disapprove any potential deal.
"I will always play my style of game, that's why I was brought over here in my first year," Kaberle said. "It's always fit perfect and if it doesn't, I will have to move on."
Kaberle who also said that it was up to him and Wilson to talk things over before training camp, and he is looking forward to the upcoming season and feels the Leafs have a good shot at the play-offs.
"I'm just looking forward to (the) first day of the season - opening night," Kaberle said. "We have a shot (at the play-offs) this year, there is a lot of change over the summer. I have a good feeling about this team. I'll do anything for this organization. They've been so good to me for (the) last 12 years."
Last season for the Leafs, the 32-year-old blueliner scored seven goals and 42 assists in 82 games.
