Tomas Plekanec scores game-winner as Montreal Canadiens edge Boston Bruins 2-1 -NHL Match Update
A matchup between Boston and Montreal is always bound to be exciting as both teams have a rivalry that goes way back and still remains heated till this day. The Canadiens took the advantage of their back-to-back scheduled meetings by winning the first against
the Bruins, 2-1, at a sold-out TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, Thursday night.
After winning just their second matchup of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season against the Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal won have now extended their streak to two straight.
Getting another two points has moved up Montreal to the 12th position, ahead of the Boston Bruins, who are not at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
Montreal goalie 24-year-old, Carey Price, showed another spectacular performance by blocking 29 of 30 shots taken on his net, slightly more than his counterpart, veteran Tim Thomas, who fell short on two.
Keeping himself focused and not panicking was the way Carey Price approached the game, which has obviously worked well for the young player.
"We've got a lot of character in this room", said Price, who helped the Habs improve to 3-5-2. "We all said it before, we weren't in any panic, we knew we had the talent in this room to win hockey games. So right now it's just getting back to the basics.
It's kind of cliché but it's true. We just keep things simplified out there and it's been working out for us".
Patrice Bergeron scored his second of the season during their second power play opportunity in the opening period on a breakaway unassisted to put Boston ahead by one.
Montreal gave three straight penalties in the first, which resulted in Bergeron scoring, but still managed to kill the other two.
Erik Cole scored the equaliser midway through a fighting filled second period. Montreal defenseman, P.K. Subban and Boston’s Brad Marchand, exchanged fists in the final minutes and were given major penalties for fighting.
"Stuff happens in a game like this, when emotions are high", Marchand said.
Tomas Plekanec made the game-winner at the 10:46 mark of the third, after which Price locked down his net and blocked all 11 attempts by Boston in the final period alone.
Boston and Montreal have one more game remaining to end the month between each other on Saturday, October 29, but this time on the Canadiens ice.
