Tomas Robinson's 6th straight double-double fuels Kansas Jayhawks over Florida Atlantic Owls: NCAA
On November 30, 2011 at the Phog Allen Fieldhouse, Lawrence Thomas Robinson registered his sixth consecutive double-double, with a game-high 19 points and a career-best 17 rebounds, to lead the Kansas Jayhawks to a 77-54 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls.
The Jayhawks have now improved to 4-2 in the tournament while Florida dropped to 4-4 with their second straight loss.
Tomas, the Kansas junior forward, who is one among the favourites for the 2012 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft, also became the first Kansas player to record double-doubles in six games in a row to start a season. The 20-year-old scored most of his points from the free throw line with 11 of 13 shots. The 6 ft 10 in forward also blocked four shots in 35 minutes of action.
Tyshawn Taylor posted 18 points on 7 for 8 shooting from charity stripe and grabbed three rebounds while Travis Releford had 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Jeff Withey also added 10 points and two blocks for Jayhawks.
Sophomores Dennis Mavin and Pablo Bertone were the only two Florida players, who reached double figures, combining for 34 of Florida’s 54 points. Bertone recorded a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks and two steals while Mavin punctuated 17 points, grabbed four rebounds and stole the ball three times in only 21 minutes. He was 6 for 12 from the floor and 5 for 8 from the line.
The Jayhawks bounced back from a 68-61 defeat to the Duke Blue Devils in the previous game and ended on 43.6 percent shooting (24 for 55) from the field while holding Florida Atlantic to just to 32 percent (21 of 65). In addition to a better shooting, Kansas also out-rebounded the Owls 49-30.
The ball was moving for the Owls early in the game and they raced to a 9-3 lead with 16:19 to go in the first half. The Jayhawks scored six unanswered points, capped by Jeff Withey’s two lay-ups, to knot the game at 9 before Jordan McCoy made a jumper to make it 11-9.
Conner Teahan and Tyshawn however posted the next five points to put Kansas ahead by 14-11. Raymond Taylor then nailed a shot from downtown to tie the game at 14 before the Jayhawks went on a 28-12 run in the last 11 minutes of the first half for a 42-26 lead at halftime.
Kansas continued to play strong defence in the second half, pushed their lead to 19 early in the half. With such a huge deficit in sight, the Owls resistance wore down and the Jayhawks romped to a 23 point win.
