  1. It may also be that the plants aren't getting enough sunlight through out the day. Not sure if that's yoru case - but you may want to also consider that.

  2. Both plants are more of a tropical variety, meaning they they a TON of sunshine and a lot of water. If you do not get enough sun up there you can get lights for them.

Next year you should try container plants, then you can bring them inside at night and move them throughout the day to the sunniest part of your house. Good Luck

  3. Yes it is, and the weather so far this summer has not been too conducive for the "hot" weather crops, such as tomatoes and peppers.  I run a farm in northeast Ohio, and my main money maker is tomatoes - I usually have a nice start to my harvest by now, but I have flowers and green tomatoes.  And get this - my spring crop of peas is STILL GOING.  In July??

Thank you, global warming.  I need to relearn how to farm.

Cold nights are your main culprit for lack of flowers, but there are some tricks you can try to encourage bloom.  Black or red plastic can be placed around the plants to help increase soil temperature, and floating row covers (the lightweight white cloth-like ones) can help heat plants and speed the flowering process.  Be cautious using these, because they can also overheat and cook your plants if you leave them on during a hot day.

Remember that to actually set fruit, you need pollenators as well.  Bees, moths, wasps, flies, mason bees and other beneficial insects need to pollenate to get those flowers to set fruit.  If you are using any kind of chemical pesticide it could reduce or eliminate their population.

Summer vegetable crops need some patience this year... I'm hoping to have some summer veggies soon.  And even though the crop is delayed, they'll still arrive.

BTW, my first watermelon harvest last year was on... Halloween weekend.  And they were so worth the wait!!
