Question:

Tomato plant?

I have a tomato plant in a large pot that is growing like crazy. It's had the yellow flowers for a couple weeks now, but no fruit. I don't know anything about growing tomatoes, so what is supposed to happen once I get flowers, and what do I need to do? I give it fertilizer when needed, it gets plenty of sun and the right amount of watering.

  1. Since it has bloomed already, you should see the tomatoes starting to come on next. Good luck with your fruit. Hope you enjoy.

  2. Hmm, if all things are going well but the fruit's not popping up, try bloom booster or any fertilizer that's heavy in phosphorus.  Perhaps what your tomato just needs is that last big boost to bloom.

Also make sure the plant's not in too high a heat...anything over 85F for long periods of time stymies the plant's growth.

  3. First of all, stop it getting any bigger, pinch out the top, and all of the side-shoots from here on in. I would say you have fed it with a high nitrogen fertiliser, and all this does is improves the health of the plant in that it grows bigger with more side shoots, and all its energy is going to producing these instead of fruit. Some gardeners will tell you to rub the blooms against each other, or rattle the plant to distribute the pollen, worth a try anyhow. Look into the centre of the bloom and look for a small green bump, if there is one in each then your tomatoes are beginning to fruit. Use the special tomatoe plant feed

  4. Blossom drop occurs whenever the plant is stressed.  Not enough water, to much nitrogen, to much humidity, cool temperatures or excessive heat.  Tomatoes can drop their flowers if daytime heat is above 90 degrees for any length of time.  Possibly a combination of too much fertilizer and heat in your case?

  5. You are probably over fertilizing.  Too much nitrogen will cause great leaf growth but no fruit.   Stop fertilizing.

  6. just watch it grow your doing everything your supposed to be doing.after they flower the tomato comes next.
