  1. Below is a link to some basic information. It is just to point out where the industry puts it's value in what research and why. Given that some tomato plants are determinate vs. indeterminate, some are early, mid season, or late season, and many are developed for the greenhouse, one needs to have a specific crop need to make a comparison. Given that need one needs to pick variety for the purpose it is grown, for the shipping distance, for the market type. Some statistics are pure research and may have no research value and therefore no grant to do that research, or that piece of work is not published as it is just informational and of no other value.

  2. Because we have some tomato plants that remain dwarf and some that will spread and cover a circle of  4 metre radius, and some varieties will start fruiting while the plant is less than half a metre long while others will wait 2 weeks and fruit a lot all at once... we can not give one answer for all varieties.

We leave 1.8 metre rows between most varieties and about 60 cm between plants. This does mean that plants will cross each other as they are fruiting.  But we do not notice any improvement in yield per are by moving them further apart.

When growing on stakes, they typically need a metre of height to 2 metres, depending on variety.  If they hang down too far from the top  with a lot of fruit the fruit will be on the ground.
