  1. It is Tomates only.

    Tomotoes is wrong.

Everybody started wondering about it since the news about salmonella spread beacause of tomatoes.

The main article published by NJ department of health, by Associated Press, carried the heading wrongly Tomotoes and hence...

Similar thing has occured in the past and 100 years back US department of agriculture declared Tomotoes as fruit and not vegetable.

Many  recipie books use the word 'tomotoes' wrongly to describe tomatoes.

Below are some details from the news :

    You say "toe-may-toe" "toe-mah-toe"

Ag Dept. says NJ tomotoes not a source of salmonella scare

    by The Associated Press

New Jersey's Agriculture Department said Garden State-grown tomatoes have been ruled out as the source of a salmonella scare in 17 other states.

Tomatoes grown in at least 20 other states, including top producers Florida and California, have also been given a clean bill of health.

More than 150 people have been sickened by infected tomatoes since April, leading McDonald's and other fast food chains to pull most tomatoes from their menus.

Perhaps the AP editorial staff should invest in a spell checker. I was never that impressed by The Associated Press anyway.

  15. It is "tomatoes" (plural), "tomato" (singular)...And, no you won't get salmonella if you buy local, hydroponic, hot house, on the vine or grow your own.

By the way, petite, diced, canned tomatoes are safe and are very good in a salad. They have been brought to a high enough temperature to kill any bacteria and are canned straight from the field, quickly and fresher than you can buy from the store.
