  1. Depends on the variety.

  2. It's the type.

  3. Varieties for commercial growing and the short season types generally have been developed with thicker skins.  For protection during shipping in one case and for cool weather protection in the other case.  And yes, prolonged hot sun can cause a tomato to grow thicker skin to help retain water.

  4. Hi! well, it mostly depends on the type like the guy above me said, like a "big beef" variety may have somewhat thin skin, while a "lemon boy" variety will have quite thicker or tougher skin.

However, from my personal experience over the years (10 of em :)  )

i have noticed that tomatoes watered a lot and tomatoes are protected from sun versus tomato plants that are not watered often, and in constant burning sun, the tomatoes in the sun with less water, especially if they are in a container (but this applies to wherever they are)  are sometimes smaller, less moist, and have thicker skin! so to avoid that, make sure your fruit on the plants are protected, perhaps with straw or tomato fabric, and the plants are kept well watered.

    Hope i helped! :D
