Tomes: Bedford is the place to be
Sean Tomes says there is no better club to be at than Bedford this season for a variety of reasons.
Tomes moved to the Championship side this summer after it quickly became clear that he wasn't going to feature in Exeter's plans for their debut Premiership season.
Tomes said: "A lot of players are Premiership players but have left for their own reasons and chosen Bedford. Sometimes you have got to go backwards to go forwards and certainly a lot of players do that. A lot of players slip through the net and need a stage to perform on."
He argues that Bedford have a number of players who would be good enough to play in the Premiership if the side was allowed to do so tomorrow. However, the club face a long and difficult season in a competitive league in order to reach the riches of the Premiership.
Tomes says there are many areas of the club that are extremely positive and forward looking. The club will have to work very hard to hold off the challenge of Worcester and Rotherham this season.
A very positive club
The biggest asset that Bedford seem to have, according to Tomes, is that there are no egos at the club. This creates a great team spirit and means that the players are constantly fighting for each other in every walk of life.
The club do have some very good players in their squad that have been involved in or have nearly be involved in top-flight rugby. Captain James Pritchard is one example as he has already played Premiership rugby for Northampton and also played for Perpignan in France.
Bedford have one of the biggest support bases in the Championship and this goes a long way to inspiring the team and helping them to play better. The fans have been in full voice so far this season and must continue to be as loud as is humanly possible.
A competitive league
Although Bedford is one of the favourites to win the Championship, they are playing in a very competitive league against some very competitive teams. This means Bedford have to be on the top of their game all season long.
Worcester have just been relegated from the Premiership and will be trying to win promotion back at the first time of trying. Rotherham are also fancied to do very well and Bristol will be looking to get over the disappointment of losing to Exeter last season in the Championship play-off final.
Tomes added: "It's the small things that make the difference between the top players in this league. A lot of players here have what it takes to get to the top. They have put together a very powerful squad and we are all working together for the same goal."
Betting advice
Bedford have a very good chance of going up this season. If you have not already backed the side because you are unsure about their credentials then it could be a good idea to wait two or three games to see how they play. If they win all of them and play well then don't think twice about avoiding them as an option this season.
Bedford possesses a lot of players that have the ability to play very well and score a lot of points. Do a little bit of homework and work out statistically the players that are most likely to score more points. This will give you key players to back and you can have a punt on top scorer at the club by the end of the season.
