Tomis CONSTANTA sweeps Maccabi TEL AVIV – 2012 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup
The first round of the semi-finals play of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men has started with the match being played in many of the European cities.
One such match was held in the Romanian city of Constanta where the home side of Tomis CONSTANTA competed with the Maccabi TEL AVIV of Israel.
The match between the two sides was pretty much one sided as the home team was able to assert themselves by making a clean sweep of their opponents. However, the Israelis did not give up the struggle in any of the three frames and kept the score close. The
final set scores stood at the following figures: 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23.
The head coach of the Israeli squad, Zohar Bar Netzer, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was held at the end of the match, “We did not display our best play but it will be a different story in Tel Aviv, where we hope
to win the return game and go for the golden set.”
On the other hand, the coach of the home side, Jorge Cannestracci, shared his views by making the following comments, “I am happy because I had left Tomis after winning the national league some years ago and tonight celebrated my comeback with a win.”
Radu Began, the captain of the winning team, stated himself in the following words, “It was a great win but this is not enough, as we must win also in Tel Aviv next week in order to advance to the semi finals.”
The opening set of the game saw the home team take the lead at 8-7 and extend it to 16-11. The guests closed in the gap at 21-19 but they could not stop the Romanians from winning the first set of the match at 25-20.
The second set too started with Romanian dominance at 8-6 but the Israeli got hold of the lead at 22-20 before making it level at 17-17. However, the home side propelled themselves forward to get hold of the second set too at 25-23.
The third set followed the same pattern as the second one with the Romanians bagging it at 25-23 as well.
