Tommaso D’Orsogna clinches Men’s 100m freestyle gold – FINA Swimming World Cup, Beijing
Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle on initial day of the sixth stop of the 2012 FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup Series in Beijing, China on Friday, November 2.
The Australian swimmer demonstrated his astonishing efforts in the four-lap freestyle discipline and outsmarted his opponents over the finishing wall for gold medal.
With his notable pace, he gained a marginal lead from his competitors in the start and sprinted his way towards the finishing end for the crown of the event.
D’Orsogna enjoyed a benefit of almost half body length over his toughest challenger as he earned his way to the top of medal rostrum for gold medal with a nice timing of 47.06 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by his teammate, Cameron McEvoy, who remained 0.35 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and surfaced on the wall for silver medal with a timing of 47.41 seconds.
McEvoy was traced by Kenneth To of Australia, who suffered a loss of only 0.18 seconds from his former finisher and tapped the wall for bronze medal with an effort of 47.59 seconds.
The third position holder was chased by Darian Townsend of South Africa and Anthony Ervin of USA, who engaged each other in a neck-to-neck race for fourth position. Ervin struggled hard to overpower Townsend in the concluding lap but failed to do so and ended in a joint finish.
They remained only 0.04 seconds slower from To and settled on the wall as fourth best finishers by submitting an effort of 47.63 seconds.
Following that, the crowd also witnessed gruelling efforts of Travis Mahoney of Australia and Zhiwu Lv of China, who were unable to surpass each other over the finishing ended their swims with identical timings of 48.08 seconds for sixth place.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Wenjie Pu, who was 0.32 seconds behind and concluded his race in eighth place by posting a time of 48.40 seconds.
In addition, D’Orsogna was happy with his gold finish in the race and received accolades for his gruelling form after the session.
