Tommaso D’Orsogna seizes Men’s 200m freestyle gold – FINA Swimming World Cup, Beijing
Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia seized gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on day two of the sixth stop of the 2012 FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup Series in Beijing, China on Saturday, November 3.
The Australian swimmer devastated hopes of his opponents in the eight-lap freestyle event as he proved his mettle for the crown.
With his immaculate pace in the opening round, he gained a marginal lead over his opponents and cruised his way towards the wall for gold medal.
He remained in a marginal lead over his following swimmers and surfaced on the wall for gold medal with a timing of 1 minute and 43.20 seconds.
Following that, the audience saw commendable efforts of Australia’s Robert Hurley and South Africa’s Darian Townsend, who struggled hard to escape each other over the finishing wall.
Both swimmers engaged each other in a stroke-to-stroke battle in the last 100 metres of the race and finished their swims in identical timings for silver medal.
They stayed nearly two arm-strokes slower from their former finisher and appeared on the finishing end as second position holders with timings of 1 minute and 43.50 seconds.
The duo was chased by Cameron McEvoy of Australia, who stayed full body length apart and surfaced on the wall for fourth position by producing a time of 1 minute and 44.45 seconds.
Fifth spot of the race was obtained by Matthew Stanley of New Zealand, who stayed 1.09 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and ended his race in a time of 1 minute and 45.54 seconds.
Stanley was traced by Dominik Meichtry of Switzerland, who was half a body length apart and finished sixth in the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 46.14 seconds.
Seventh position of the race was obtained by Michael Klueh of USA, who posted 1 minute and 47.62 seconds.
Last spot of the event was obtained by Yinghua Qiu, who was only 0.01 seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 47.63 seconds.
Furthermore, D’Orsogna was contented with his victory and collected medal after the race.
