Tommaso D’Orsogna wins Men’s 100m freestyle gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia won gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle on opening day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, October 17.
The Australian swimmer demonstrated his astonishing efforts in the four-lap freestyle discipline and proved his mettle for gold medal of the event. He faced tough competition from Darian Townsend of South Africa, but with his astonishing pace, managed to
overpower him over the finishing wall for gold medal.
D’Orsogna stayed two arm-strokes ahead of his closest competitor and touched the wall for gold medal with a wonderful timing of 47.11 seconds.
Afterwards, the crowd witnessed gruelling efforts of USA’s Anthony Ervin, who elevated his efforts and engaged Townsend in a neck-to-neck race for second position.
Both swimmers struggled hard to overpower each other over the finishing end but failed to do so and ended their swims in a joint finish for silver medal.
With his commendable forms, Townsend and Ervin stayed 0.32 seconds slower from the champion and earned their way to the top of victory stand for second position by touching the wall with identical timings of 47.43 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Evgeny Lagunov of Russia, who stayed 0.34 seconds apart and settled on the wall with an effort of 47.76 seconds.
Lagunov was trailed by Luca Dotto of Italy, who stayed almost 0.60 seconds apart and ended his race in fifth best place by posting a time of 48.33 seconds.
Sixth spot of the race was obtained by Jason Dunford of Kenya, who was just an inch slower from overpowering his foregoing finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 48.47 seconds.
Dunford was trailed by Fernando Santos of Brazil, who was only 0.05 seconds slower and clocked an effort of 48.52 seconds for seventh position.
Last spot of the event was obtained by Artem Lobuzov of Russia, who stayed 0.79 seconds slower and tapped the wall with a timing of 49.31 seconds.
In addition, D’Orsogna was happy with his gold finish in the race and collected his medal after the event.
