Tommy Fleetwood retains his European Tour card for the 2013 golf season
Tommy Fleetwood fired a three-under par 69 in the final round of the SA Open Championship, to finish tied for the sixth position, and secured his European Tour card for the 2013 season.
The tournament was being played at the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, featuring some of the prominent names from different parts of the world.
The Englishman started off his final-round campaign with the tied 13th position on the leaderboard. He desperately needed to hold on to his nerves, in a bid to maintain his position in the top-27, at the end of the tournament.
He got off to a confident start and recorded three birdies against a lone bogey on the front nine of the course to reach the turn in two-under.
He then added another shot to his scorecard by recording a birdie on the 14th hole to finish the tournament with a nine-under par overall score.
At the end of the week, he found himself taking the 109th position in The Race to Dubai, which allowed him to retain his full-time playing card for the 2013 European Tour season.
“It feels better than a win pretty much! It was probably the most stressful four days of my life I think. But I played great today - I think I hit 17 greens which under any circumstances is pretty good. I’m absolutely made up, honestly. It’s unbelievable,”
he said.
Last year, Fleetwood spent his time on the European Challenge Tour and finished the season as the Challenge Tour’s number one player.
According to him, it was a great experience to play on the Challenge Tour. However, he was desperate to stay on the bigger stage, rather than going back to the tier-two circuit.
“Today, it was the difference between going back to the Challenge Tour or staying on the best Tour in the world,” he stated.
“It’s a hard, grafting year on the Challenge Tour, as good as it is, it’s very tough. The European Tour is a much better lifestyle I must say. I’m just made up, it’s just great to have a job next year,” he said.
