Tommy Gainey off to a good start at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Tommy Gainey carded a four-under par 66 on the opening day of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club to tie for the sixth position on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
Gainey got off to a slow start, as he recorded a bogey on the second hole (11th) he played. However, he did not allow the bogey to take control over his nerves and made a great comeback with four birdies through the first nine holes he played.
The front nine of the course witnessed him record two birdies against a lone bogey, which allowed him to settle two strokes behind the leader Zach Johnson.
According to him, his putting technique played a major role in recording such a low score in difficult conditions at the venue.
“You know, I hit the ball pretty good,” he said. “But I made a lot of putts. I got to say putting the ball today was definitely a great thing for me. If I didn't putt as good, I wouldn't have shot 4 under”.
He also commented about the wind gusts blew throughout the day affecting the shots made by the players.
He said that the player had to face real challenge especially when it blew in the opposite direction to their shots.
“Very difficult, the wind, at least was blowing straight 10, 15, gusting to 25 at different times,” he said. “And the wind on this golf course, as tight as these fairways are, with all of these bunkers around these fairways, you're asking for a long day.
You got to be very precise”.
Despite the strong winds blowing on the course, the golf commentators believe that the players managed really well to record low scores.
A number of players looked making some really good shots in the presence of the winds making the golf fans cheer on the course.
Zach Johnson, the current leader, recorded a bogey-free six-under par 64 that is considered an amazing score at the course.
In the meantime, Jason Dufner, the winner of two out of the last three events on the PGA Tour, recorded a five-under par to share the second place with three other players.
