Tommy Gainey records first top-10 finish during the 2012 PGA Tour season
Tommy Gainey carded a three-under par 67 in the final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational to take the third spot, the first top-10 finish of the season, at the Colonial Country Club on Sunday, May 27, 2012.
While Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson were contending for the top position in the event, and it seemed as if the others were fighting for the third place on the leaderboard.
Therefore, Gainey was in contention with Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler and the surging Chris Kirk right from the beggining of the round.
He made his presence felt on the course from the second hole when he recorded a birdie, followed by another one on the third hole.
Through 11 holes, he was five under par for the round; however, a double bogey on the 12th hole put him back on three-under par.
In total, he recorded six birdies against a bogey and double bogey each to finish five strokes behind the winner Johnson.
It was Gainey’s eighth successful cut in the 17 PGA Tour events he has played so far in the 2012 season.
He now believes that the first top-10 finish of the season will help him boost his morale in the upcoming events on the PGA Tour.
"This year has just been a total struggle to say the least," Gainey said. "My stats say it, and my money says it. Before this week, I had only made four cuts and won less than $100,000. To have injuries just made it worse, but now I feel like I'm on the
road to recovery with my golf game as well as my health”.
"Everything is finally coming together for me -- my swing, my health," he added. "If I can just eliminate a few mistakes, I should be on the leader board quite a bit".
In the meantime, Zach Johnson survived a two-stroke penalty on the final hole of the tournament to register his second win in the history of the event.
In fact, one can say that Jason Dufner handed him the victory after he recorded a double and triple bogey each during the final round to settle for a four-over par 74.
