Tommy Gainey remains in contention after shooting a 67 in second round at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Tommy Gainey added a three-under par 67 to his opening round score of a four-under par to finish four strokes behind the halfway leader Jason Dufner at the Crowne Plaza Invitational on Friday, May 25, 2012.
Gainey got off to a confident start with a run of three consecutive birdies on the first three holes he played.
However, bogeys on the seventh and eighth hole spoiled his mood and he went back at one-under.
Yet, he did not lose his confidence and kept on playing some good shots on the course that earned him another three birdies.
Overall, it was another good display of game by Gainey at the Colonial Country Club. The highlight of his performance includes 11 greens in regulation that allowed him to sign six birdies in total.
In addition to that, five of his six birdies came from the at least 10 feet including 21'10" and 20'5" that came on the 2nd and 10th hole, respectively.
Therefore, it seems that he is getting control over his putting technique, as he looked really confident on each of the putt he made during the day.
According to the golf commentators, Gainey is not considered as a player who can consistently smash low scores during a tournament. Therefore, one cannot expect much from him unless he proves otherwise.
Of the 16 appearance he has made so far during the 2012 PGA Tour season, he succeeded in making the cut only six times, which clearly speaks of his ability to score during tournaments.
His best finish of the season came in the Wells Fargo Championship when he tied for the 40th position after recording a four-under par 284 tournament score.
He is currently tied for the third position on the leaderboard along with Bo Van Pelt, who recorded an amazing round of six-under par 64.
Zach Johnson, the overnight leader, is two strokes ahead at nine-under par to take the second spot. He managed to score a three-under par 67 in the second round.
In the meantime, the defending champion, David Toms missed the cut after recording a five-over par two-round score.
