Tommy Gainey wins McGladrey Classic
Sunday proved to be the most enthralling and eventful day of the tournament. A day where records stumbled, birdies were fired all around, and above all, a new face stood at the victory podium.
Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, Tommy Gainey shot a course record of 60 to rally from seven shots behind, at the start of the day, to win McGladrey Classic.
When Gainey teed off on Sunday, he was seven shots behind and nobody would have thought that by the end of the day, Tommy would be holding his first title on the PGA Tour.
This is the fourth time this season that a player has rallied from seven shots behind on the last day to win the title.
37-year-old Tommy, who has a self made swing known as “Two Gloves Swing”, in which he wear the gloves on the both hands, missed the magical number of 59 narrowly at the Seaside Course.
"It's been a hard year for me and finally, we got it right," said Gainey. "I get bashed all the time about my swing. The only thing that matters is right before impact on the downswing".
Gainey, who had only one top-ten finish prior to his victory at the Seaside Course, edged David Toms by one stroke.
Toms registered an excellent round of 63 on Sunday but fell short by just a stroke. It was just unlucky for Toms, who had played extremely well throughout the four days.
"I was thinking about what kind of putt I was going to have before I ever hit the fairway," Toms said. "You get ahead of yourself and that's what happens."
However, if somebody is shooting a 60, then he clearly deserves the title, which is exactly what Gainey did.
The 37-year-old had to wait for more than two hours after finishing his round to see if anyone could catch up with him.
"Got a long way to go," Gainey said, as he walked off the 18th green.
Furyk needed a birdie on the last hole to force the game into a playoff. However, when it is not your day, it is just not yours.
The world number 23 made the only bogey of the tournament at the most crucial time – on the 18th hole – on Sunday to finish on a lone third.
