Tommy Haas awarded wildcard for Atlanta Tennis Championships 2011 – Tennis News
German Tommy Haas was awarded a wild card entry into the Atlanta Tennis Championships played at the Racquet Club from 18-24 July. This event is organized by the Association Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour inaugrating the
Olympus US Open Series.
The former world number two, Tommy, announced that he believed he was in a robust form to take on the series and was excited about the championships thus confirming his entry. This year he played two Grand Slams and an ATP 250
world tour event at Halle, Germany. Although he didn’t win any matches he was all about spirit and motivation.
Tommy’s last run on tour was at Wimbledon on the 20th of June this year against world number 92, Gilles Muller. Hass pushed it out on the outdoor grass court, however, lost the match 6-7(5), 6-7(3), 6-3, 3-6 but tried
his best taking the first two sets to tiebreakers.
The tournament started in 1988; a major event of the Grand Prix Tennis Circuit until 1990. Previously known as RCA Championships, it was mainly a clay court event, however, was later given a makeover by the Indianapolis Tennis
Center by not only changing the name to Atlantis tennis Championships but was resurfaced to a Deco-Turf II making it a hard court. In order to get more publicity the event is held just before the US Open.
A debutant here, Haas would be joined on hard outdoor courts with world number ten, Mardy Fish and local giant John Isner not to mention some influential names such as Milos Raonic and Lleyton Hewitt, in addition to James Blake,
Ryan Sweeting, Kevin Anderson and many more to the singles field. A marquee team that fans will want to see is the doubles entry list pairs Isner and Blake. Another pair that would catch the eye is Grigor Dimitrov and Sweeting and the Asians, Nishikori and
Yen-Hsun Lu.
The tournament administration is excited about top players playing in the event. Tournament Director, Director Bob Bryant said “He is a seasoned veteran who has had an impressive career. We know our fans will enjoy watching him
and other world-class professionals at our tournament, which begins in less than two weeks.”
The spacious indoor courts would be centrally air-conditioned to beat the rising temperatures of July, making it enjoyable for fans; in addition the tournament directors have thrown in extra goodies by adding events that would
allure all sorts of age groups are the Opening Night Festivities, Kids Day, 10 & Under Play Day, the Corona Beach House and etc thus making it a family affair.
