Tommy Haas committed to feature the Heineken Open next season – Tennis News
Former world number two, Tommy Haas, will continue his comeback voyage next season and will kick-off the New Year with his participation in the Heineken Open. The ATP World Tour event is scheduled to be played from 7th
to 12th of January 2013 on the hard courts of Stanley Street tennis centre in Auckland, New Zealand.
The 34-year-old German veteran has been sidelined from professional tennis circuit for quiet long time and eventually made his comeback to the ATP World Tour last year at the French Open. Haas was ranked 896th when he
played his home tournament in Halle last summer but it has been a story of consistency and sheer hard work which has taken him to the world number 21 rank in ATP at the moment.
Haas’ amazing return to form has earned him the ATP Comeback Player of the Year award recently and is very confident to continue his heroics in the coming season. The Heineken Open will be a competitive tournament, as a number
of other top-class contenders will ascend on the hard courts of Auckland to get ready for the Australian Open Grand Slam event.
Other big guns in the playing field include the liked of the world number five, David Ferrer, the German number one, Philipp Kohlschreiber, USA’s Sam Querrey, Polish tennis prodigy Jerzy Janowicz, former top-tenner Jurgen Melzer
and Slovak contender Martin Klizan. It will be very interesting to see all these talented tennis players battling for glory against one another and the matches will be surely worth watching. The NZ Heineken National Sponsorship Manager, Peter Wills, was also
very excited about the season-opening event in Auckland and the depth of the main draw.
"With David returning to defend his title, along with former world No 2 Tommy Haas, and the number of rising stars in the field, this certainly bodes well for the future of the tournament. It would truly be a momentous occasion
if David can win his fourth Auckland title, equalling the great Roy Emerson's achievement."
Haas will certainly look to gain some early ranking points at the Heineken Open and break back into the Top-20 ATP World Rankings.
