Tommy Haas crushes Tobias Kamke in the quarter-finals – Citi Open 2012
Fourth seed, Tommy Haas of Germany, showed no respite to his countryman, Tobias Kamke, ousting the world number 107 in the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washington, USA on Friday.
The 36th ranked player, Haas, allowed his compatriot to win just three games in the entire match, beating him in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and six minutes to reach the last four.
Haas and Kamke began by winning their serve in the opening two games of the match to level the proceedings at 1-1. The higher ranked German player totally dominated the events later on, as he broke Kamke twice and grabbed five
games in a row to triumph 6-1.
The 34-year-old failed to hit any ace and committed a couple of double faults, keeping his first serve percentage at 60. The right-hander had an impressive conversion rate, claiming 10 of the 12 first and six of the eight second
delivery points. The German did not come across any break threat and utilised two of the three he created in the opener.
Just like the first set, Haas and Kamke held their opening serves to take the score to 1-1. Haas hit a blow to Kamke in the third and consolidated on it to move ahead 3-1. The German number three grabbed his second breakthrough
in the seventh game and made the most of his double advantage to clinch it 6-2.
Haas said, while talking to the reporters after the match, "It was tough conditions out there today. We both felt the heat a little bit, and the ball sort of played a little differently. I think for his game, it didn’t really suit
him that much. He threw me a lot of unforced errors, but personally I am pretty happy with the way I played things."
The German will face American number two, Mardy Fish, in the semi-finals. The top seed ousted Xavier Malisse of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
On playing Haas in the next match, Fish said, "I expect a really tough match. He's a great player, he was as high as two in the world a while ago, but he’s had a bunch of injuries. He seems like he is close to being 100 per cent
back with his health. It’s great for him, we are really good friends. It’ll be fun.”
This will be the fifth meeting between Haas and Fish. The German leads Fish 3-1 in the head to head series.
