Tommy Haas destroys Aljaz Bedene in second round scuffle – Erste Bank Open 2011
Tommy Haas, German world No.273, won a staggering comeback in the second round bout of Erste Bank Open 2011 against Aljaz Bedene, Slovenian world No.204. The veteran German ousted his rival 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, in just an hour and 42 minutes as they played on hard indoor circuit at Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria on Thursday, 27th of October.
Opening up the match serving first, Haas served out the starter rolling down game one, 1-0. Bedene followed up with a winner and levelled up right away, 1-1, and stood to return again. Serving out game three, Haas continued to bag games on respective serves and led, 2-1.
Bedene, ranked world No.204, kept on the veteran’s, Haas, tail, 2-2, before the 22-year-old struck in game 7, breaking the lower ranked German to lead the set, 3-4. Serving out game eight, Slovenian extended his lead to 5-3, before the veteran cut the lead to 4-5 winning game 9.
Left with just one more game to win the set, Bedene pulled off a winner of game 10, 6-4, to bag the set with mere difficulty and moved onto set two.
Struggling in the first set, German world No.273 pulled back in set two winning with the same score he was brought down in the opening set. Serving out the set opener with a triple game point winner, 1-0, Haas broke the higher ranked Slovenian in game two with a super double break point to lead the set, 2-0.
With the set boiling up early, Bedene broke back in game three, 1-2, and served out game four to level up the scores for the first time in the second set, 2-2. Brawling out and levelling up next at 3-3 and then at 4-4, the veteran German struck again, serving out game nine, 5-4, Haas broke the Slovenian in game 10 to finish off the set winning 6-4, and level up the match scores, 1-1.
Temperatures rose as the two entered the decider set with Haas doing away with game one, 1-0. Breaking Bedene early in the set, the former world No.9 stormed away with the first two games to lead the set 2-0. Bagging his third consecutive win, the 33-year-old attained a solid three games lead before Bedene won his first game of the set, 3-1.
Unable to break back any soon, the higher ranked Slovenian kept on lagging behind as Haas maintain his 3 games lead winning game 5, 4-1. With just two more games left for the German to win a super comeback, Haas finished off the decider with a mesmerising break-n-serve winning the set, 6-1, and the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Finally back in his form, the veteran and former world No.9 moves into the quarter-final round of the ATP World Tour 250 event to play against the mighty Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro, to brawl out the semis seat on Friday, 28th of October.
