Tommy Haas disappointed for not making into Olympics – Tennis News
Former world number two, Tommy Haas, was not happy with the German Olympics’ Committee decision of not selecting him for London Olympics 2012, a major sports event held after every four years.
The German star was disappointed of not being selected by the German Olympics Sports Federation. He was ranked outside top 100 for most of this year which ruled him out from London Olympics. The committee state that the player must be ranked in the Top 24
in the world to participate. Haas was quoted:
“When I watch the Olympics, I’m still surprised I’m not there. The German Olympic committee didn’t nominate me, which was a big mistake in my eyes. That’s life. That happens. I’m happy to play the same week while the Olympics are going on.”
Haas won a silver medal in Sydney 2000 but pulled out from the Beijing Olympics four years ago due to injuries. He further stated:
“I think it’s a special occasion, it’s at Wimbledon. I was very disappointed not to be part of (this year’s Olympics), but you forget about it now and try to worry about playing in the tournament.”
The 34-year-old started this season campaign outside Top 200 but lifted his game at the BMW Open in Munich where he made a semi-final berth (lost to third seed Marin Cilic). He then went on to capture his 13th career title at the Gerry Weber Open,
an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place on the grass courts. Haas stomped over sixth seeded Marcel Granollers, third seeded Tomas Berdych and his top compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber before setting up date with
the Swiss Maestro. He eased past the second seeded Roger Federer and conquered the tournament.
Apart from losing in the opening round at the Wimbledon Championships the following week, he secured another final showdown at the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg (lost to third seed Juan Monaco).
Currently ranked 36th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Haas recently won title on grass courts and his experience could have lead his nation to glory. However, after ruling out from Olympics, the German veteran decided to
play at the Citi Open in Washington D.C. He is seeded fourth in the tournament and is bidding to bag his second year-to-date title.
