Tommy Haas ecstatic at winning the Gerry Weber Open in Halle – Tennis News
German tennis superstar, Tommy Haas, delighted the home crowd by ousting the former world number one, Roger Federer, in the final of the Gerry Weber Open on Sunday. The wildcard entrant won the opening set 7-6(5) and marched on
to the win the title with a 6-4 triumph in the second phase of the match. It was shocking news for everyone all across the globe especially considering that Federer is invincible at the grass court surface.
34-year-old Haas was ecstatic to take the title and inch closer to his dream of grabbing 500 wins before the end of the season. He started the tournament as an underdog who was ranked 87 in the world but his terrific performance
and high morale helped him grab his lucky 13th title of the career.
Expressing his delight at winning the championship at Halle, he confessed, “If I think about it, it could be the greatest and best thing in my career. To win against such a strong player like Roger in this final in Germany is something
really special. I won my last title in 2009 here and couldn't defend it a year later because of an operation. Because of that it's even more fantastic right now."
He further added, “First of all I think I was surprised. I knew that on the other side of the court there is a good friend of mine and a player I really respect a lot.” Haas explained that moment of triumphing Federer for the fourth
time in his career to be “beautiful”. He won in front of the home crowd and the entire arena gave him the standing ovation for pulling up such a majestic upset; in fact technically it was the fifth straight upset of the tournament for the German former world
number nine.
He was handed a very tough draw against the Aussie booming starlet, Bernard Tomic. However, an injury to the Aussie gave him an early entry into the second round where he trashed the sixth seed Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, in straight
sets. The next epic moment was when he trounced the third seed Czech, Tomas Berdych, in the quarters and stunned everyone but plonking the eighth seed defending champion, Philipp Kohlschreiber, the semi-final. So, it has been a terrific tournament for the
German who has jumped several places to break into the Top-50 players of the world. It was incredible to witness such a breathtaking warm-up event before Wimbledon.
