Tommy Haas scrambles Michael Berrer in the first round – BMW Open 2012
Former world number two, Tommy Haas of Germany, bulldozed his compatriot, Michael Berrer, in the first round of the BMW Open in Munich, Russia on Tuesday. Haas showed no respite to his countryfellow, allowing Berrer to win just
a couple of games before beating him 6-0, 6-2 in just 51 minutes.
Haas was near flawless in the opener, as he did not drop even a single game, breaking Berrer in the second, fourth and sixth games. Such was the level of his dominance that the 34-year-old permitted Berrer to claim just five points
in the entire set, sealing it 6-0.
The German gave extraordinary performance in all departments of the game, as he banged in three aces and did not lose any point on his serve, clinching all the eight and four on the first and second deliveries respectively. The
Florida, USA resident grabbed seven of the 10 points on the first returns and did not lose even a single point on the second ones, winning all five of them.
The second set saw better competition compared to the first, as both players held their serve in the first two games to equalise the score at 1-1. Haas snatched three in a row after that to attain a 4-1 lead. Berrer succeeded in
winning his second game to reduce the trail to 2-4 but his success was temporary, as Haas captured two more consecutively to win 6-2.
The right-hander, Haas, fired three aces and won all the nine first serve points in the second set. He was also outstanding on the second deliveries and returns, claiming seven of the 10 and seven of the nine points on them respectively.
Haas shared, after the match, "I haven’t played a match here in five years, so playing in front of my family and German fans is always something special. I don’t even know how many more times that’s going to happen for me really,
so I really put a lot of pressure on myself to try to play well and enjoy it. I’m really happy with my performance. Michael probably wasn’t on his ‘A’ game, but I didn’t really give him a chance to really play his game either."
The German is pitted against top seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, in the second round.
Expecting a tough match against Tsonga, Haas said, "I look forward to that. It’s obviously a very good test to see yourself against a Top 10 player."
Haas and Tsonga are tied 1-1 in the FedEx ATP head to head series.
