Tommy Haas shocks Janko Tipsarevic to enter quarters – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012
Former world number two, Tommy Haas, stunned the sixth seed, Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia, with a breadstick at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012 on Thursday. He jolted down a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the Serb to power into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.
The German veteran re-kindled his old spark to upset the Serbian number two in their fourth outing at this hard court event. After recording this victory in one hour and six minutes, Haas not only improved to a 3-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against the world number nine but also secured a place in the final eight.
Haas, who is bidding for his 14th career title, made a strong start at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena. After Tipsarevic held his serve in the fourth game, the German blasted powerful forehands and went on a four-game tear. He blocked the only breakpoint he faced to keep his entire serves and availed two out of 10 break chances to inch towards the fame.
Currently ranked 21st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Haas maintained his intensity towards the following set. He got the coveted break in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After the Serb held his serve in the fourth game, the veteran reeled off last three games and clinched the set with a breadstick. He swiped all of his serves without facing any trouble and cashed both break opportunities to dominate.
The 34-year-old smashed eight aces and regardless of clobbering a slightly lower first serve share of 60 per cent as compared to his rival’s 61 per cent, Haas spectacularly marked 25 out of 27 points on it. He also spilled less unforced errors and ended the match with 66 points.
Next challenge for Haas is the second seed, Novak Djokovic, who dumped Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in straight sets to set up this meeting. The Serbian ace was never challenged with any breakpoint and capitalised on three out of seven break chances, eventually stealing the show with a 6-3, 6-3 score line.
