Tommy Haas stuns Gilles Simon in the second round – German Tennis Championships 2012
Former world number two, Tommy Haas of Germany, showed some highlights of his previous class, as he upset the defending champion, Gilles Simon, in the second round of the Bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships in Hamburg
on Wednesday.
Haas lost the first set but fought back to capture the next two and win the contest 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes.
Simon went ahead straightaway, breaking Haas in the opening game of the encounter and holding his following serve to attain a 2-0 lead. The Frenchman held throughout the set and grabbed it 6-4.
Haas made a similar response at the start of second set, capturing opening two games and taking a 2-0 lead. Though, Simon broke back in the subsequent one to come on equal terms, levelling the proceedings at 2-2. They exchanged
a blow in the following two games to even it out at 3-3. Haas took complete control after that, as he snatched three in a row to seal it 6-3.
After the scores getting tied at one set apiece, both players were looking for their chance to breakthrough in the decider. Haas and Simon swapped a strike in the first eight games to equalise the score at 4-4. The German hit the
decisive blow in the ninth and captured the next one without dropping any point to triumph 6-4.
Both players fired three aces but Simon committed four horrible double faults compared to two by Haas. The German saved three of the seven break threats he came across and utilised five of the seven he created in the match.
Haas said, while talking to the reporters after the match, “I don’t take anything for granted. I’m really a happy guy. I’m happy to have the chance to be playing at this level after a tough injury again. I didn’t know if I was
able to reach that level again and right now I’m playing at a pretty high level. And I think sometimes the matches that I have won show that at least, which is nice. It’s a nice momentum to have again, a nice feeling obviously.”
He added, “It doesn’t come for free. Nobody hands it to you. You have to work hard for it and I’ll take it and I’m just going to try to continue this good run as long as I can.”
The German will now lock horns with his seventh seeded compatriot, Florian Mayer, in the quarter-finals.
