Tommy Haas stuns Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach quarter-final – BMW Open 2012
Former world number two, Tommy Haas of Germany, advanced to his maiden quarter-final of the season, as he upset top seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the second round at the BMW Open in Munich on Wednesday.
Currently ranked 134th in the world, the German took just 59 minutes to win the contest.
Haas made an amazing start to the match, grabbing first five games to attain a 5-0 advantage. Tsonga escaped some humiliation by holding his serve in the sixth but failed to challenger his opponent any further, losing it 1-6.
The 34-year-old, Haas, served quite brilliantly, as he smacked a couple of aces and 76 percent of the first deliveries, converting 14 of the 16 of them into points in the opener. The German returned very well, pocketing five of
the nine first and three of the six second reply points.
The second set was a bit competitive as compared to the first, as Haas and Tsonga held their serve in the opening four games to take the score to 2-2. The German snatched a break in the fifth and consolidated on it to build a 4-2
lead. Haas sustained his advantage till the end, winning it 6-4.
The German banged in two aces and captured 15 of the 19 first serve points. The right-hander’s best performance came on the replies to his opponent’s second deliveries, as he claimed incredibly seven of the eight points on them
in the second set.
Haas’ last victory against a top 10 player came in 2009, when he defeated the then world number four, Novak Djokovic, in the quarter-finals at the Wimbledon Championships.
Giving an interview after the match, a jubilant Haas said, "It is great. I can't remember the last time I beat a Top 10 player. These are the things you work for. I really didn't expect to play this well. I took my chances when
I had them and it feels great to have such a nice victory once again."
When asked about the reason of his defeat, Tsonga replied, "Simply said it was that Tommy played better than me. He didn't allow me any time to express myself, or to control the ball. It wasn't down to a lack of practice as I put
in two hour sessions and normally that is sufficient.”
Haas will now play eighth seed, Marcos Baghdatis, for a place in the last four. Baghdatis defeated Dustin Brown in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
