Tommy Haas stuns Marcel Granollers to reach the last eight – Gerry Weber Open 2012
German veteran, Tommy Haas, registered an upset win against the 22nd ranked Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, on the eve of Thursday to delight the home crowd at Halle, Germany. He made full use of the wildcard allotted to
him and stunned the sixth seed Spaniard to thumping straight sets loss; posted scores of 6-3, 6-4 taking just around 78 minutes.
Previously, both players had faced each other on two different occurrences and the head-to-head scores were tied at 1-1. Hass had defeated the Spaniard in Houston 2009. However, Granollers recently defeated the German in the second
round of the Indian Wells this year.
So, the 26-year-old Spaniard was in good position to post another win against the 34-year-old German. However, the scenario turned against him and the German had his revenge of the earlier loss.
Haas started off with a serve hold and broke serve in the fourth game of the match to take an early lead. He consolidated his position with another thumping serve hold to love that gave him a resounding lead of 4-1. Granollers
was not finding the supreme run of form and missed a lot of first serves that led to his downfall in the match.
The pressure was exerted continuously by the German superstar on the Spaniard. He had another opportunity to break serve in the eighth game but the sixth seed managed to hold on. However, a crushing serve hold to love from Haas
rounded off the first set.
It was expected that the sixth seed Spaniard will make a comeback into the match. However, the lack of support from the crowd and the superior game play from the German veteran closed all doors for him. He stayed in the set for
the first eight games of the second set; holding serve with little pressure. Granollers lost the most critical breakpoint in the ninth game and couldn’t win a single pointy in the following game that ended the match.
“He's a very tricky player. He's No. 22 in the world so you know what you're going to get. I played him recently in Indian Wells, where I lost a tough three setter, so I was seeking revenge. I knew I had to play some of my best
tennis and I think this was one of my best matches throughout the whole year. I'm really pleased to have beaten him today.”
Tommy Haas contests the quarter-final clash against the third seed Czech, Tomas Berdych.
